In an interview with Malcolm West of Comcast Fairgrounds Racing Review that aired 4-31-03 Garrett said “I started racing in Mississippi by driving Go-Karts in Holly Springs, Iuka and some Tulsa Championships. Then I started running at Highland Rim in the Late Models and I hope to make a run with Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. one day in the Winston Cup. This is a good place to start out  and I think this will make me better”.
